Tafiti Walkthrough

Tafiti, which means "do research" in Swahili, is an experimental search front-end from Microsoft, designed to help people use the Web for research projects that span multiple search queries and sessions by helping visualize, store, and share research results. Tafiti uses both Microsoft Silverlight and Live Search to explore the intersection of richer experiences on the Web and the increasing specialization of search.

Engaging research experience

To get started with Tafiti, go to www.tafiti.com and search for information on your research topic. When you find an interesting search result, save it in your Shelf.
  • Click in the Search box and enter your search terms
  • To see one of the search results, click its title in the result list.
  • To save a search result for later, drag it to your Shelf on the right.

Organize your search results

To see the items on your shelf, click on one of your stacks. You can also:
  • Label a stack – hover over the stack and click ‘type to label…’.
  • Remove items – hover over the item and click the red remove button.
  • Clear a stack – hover over a stack and click on the white X that appears.

Share your research

Tafiti makes online research a social experience. Sharing your results is easy; you can send stacks to anyone’s email address, or you can post your results to your Windows Live Space.

Email your results

Send a link to your Tafiti shelf with these simple steps. (NOTE: _the email functionality is not available at http://tafiti.mslivelabs.com but is in the source code and can be tested from http://www.tafiti.com
  • Sign in with your Windows Live ID if you’re not already signed in.
  • Click the stack to view the result list.
  • Click E-mail It at the top of the list.
  • Enter the email address, a subject line, and a message that will be sent along with the stack.
  • Click Send. The recipient gets a link in their email that brings them to Tafiti and shows them your stack.

Blog your results

You can post your results to your Windows Live Space without leaving Tafiti. Just make sure that email publishing is enabled in your space and that you know the secret word you provided.
  • Click the stack to view the result list.
  • Click Blog it at the top of the list.
  • A popup from Windows Live spaces will be pre-populated with your shelf and you can modify the content and post it to your blog.
  • A link to your stack is posted to your Windows Live Space.

Visualize the result space

Want a unique view of your search results? Tree View demonstrates the visualization power of Microsoft Silverlight by showing your results outside the usual list. The tree cycles through the results, gradually bringing each one to the front.
  • Click the Tree icon in the search results list to see Tree view.
  • Hover over a result to see a summary.
  • Click the result to bring the site up in a new window.
  • Drag the slider at the bottom to change how many results are shown.
  • Click the expand icon expand.png to go to full-screen view.
  • Click the collapse icon collapse.png to go back to the results list.

Get the latest on your subject

Tafiti isn’t just about web search – find images, news, and blog posts on your subject too. Save and share these results by dragging them to your shelf, just like web search results.
  • To find images about your subject, click the Image icon image.png
  • To find the latest news about the subject, click the News icon news.png
  • To find the newest blog posts on your subject, click the Feeds icon feeds.png
